Mumbai Indians 1.80 Delhi Capitals 2.10

The memories of UAE should be long and distant for Mumbai Indians just like they were never there. Mumbai Indians became the first team to zero-in onto their perfect eleven and that has given them immaculate results in the tournament so far. Their upcoming assignment could perhaps be the biggest challenge for Mumbai Indians in this season, considering that their opponents in the upcoming match have done equally well, if not better in the tournament so far.

Mumbai Indians will be up against Delhi Capitals in the 27th match of the tournament, the match that will also mark the exact mid-point of the league stage of IPL 2020. The two teams are placed at the top of the ladder and this match will more or less decide the supremacy at the top of the table. Both teams are in rampaging mood at the moment and a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards. The match is to be played at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Ground, Abu Dhabi.

Mumbai Indians may have a couple of losses written next to their name on the points table, it needs to be brought out that one of those losses was in a match, which they so well managed to take into the super-over. Despite that, they have been flirting with the top of the table position, and given their net run-rate, a win in the upcoming match could be enough to take them to the top.

As it stands, Mumbai Indians have won four matches from six played and are consequently placed at the second spot on the points table. Their net run-rate of 1.488 is best for any team in the tournament and Mumbai Indians would want to build on top of this.

MI have done well in all three departments of the game and that is evident by the number of milestones their players have achieved. All of their top-four batsmen have at least a fifty each to their respective names and it could easily be top-five batsmen if Kieren Pollard was to bat at three-drop. Not only that, Mumbai Indians are at the top of the charts when it comes to the most number of runs scored in the death overs.

Led by Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians draw their strength from the consistency in team selection and from the core that has more or less been the same over the last few overs. They have not tinkered around with their combinations and that is what has worked so well for them. In the bowling department as well, Mumbai Indians have three world-class fast-bowlers, who have proved to be effective against almost all sides so far. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and James Pattinson have been brilliant at the death with Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, and Kieren Pollard taking care of the middle-overs. Hardik Pandya, if and whenever fit to bowl, will add to the balance of this already-balanced bowling attack. Also, they have Nathan Coulter Nile available on the bench who would be a perfect replacement if any of the Mumbai’s fast bowlers needs rest.

Against Rajasthan Royals as well, in their previous match, Mumbai Indians looked flawless. Suryakumar Yadav was brilliant and got ample support from the other middle-orders. They were so good with the bat that they scored a total of 193 without Kieron Pollard getting to bat. In the second-innings, Jasprit Bumrah was the wreaker-in-chief as he picked up four wickets for 20 runs in his our overs. The other pace bowlers did a remarkable job too as both Trent Boult and James Pattinson returned with a wicket each.

On paper, Mumbai Indians do not appear to be having a weak-link in their team. If anything, it could be about the inexperience of Rahul Chahar, but the way Chahar has bowled in the competition so far, his inexperience in unlikely to be of any significance. Considering the form Mumbai Indians are in and the immaculate balance they’ve got, beating them is certainly going to take a colossal effort.

It’s been a pleasant surprise for many fans to see Delhi Capitals dominating so well in the tournament. While they still haven’t been at their best, the fact they are placed at the top of the table speaks volumes about the capability they possess. With five wins in six matches, one of which came in super-over, Delhi Capitals have been one of the most difficult sides to get past. Their net run-rate of 1.267, which is second only to that of Mumbai Indians, in an evidence of how dominant the Capitals have been.

While most of the Capitals’ players are still to get to their peak, Delhi Capitals have clicked wonderfully well as a team. Their only weak link appeared to be Shimron Hetmyer, who removed all the doubts surrounding him with a match-winning performance against Rajasthan Royals. Shikhar Dhawan hasn’t performed at the top, but the management is likely to persist with him at the top given the big-match player Dhawan is.

With the likes of Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada available to lead the fast bowling attack, Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack looks intimidating. While the fast bowlers have been an integral part of their success so far, it’s been their spinners who have flown under the radar. Despite losing Amit Mishra to an injury, Delhi Capitals’ spin-attack has never looked under-powered. In fact, the likes of Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin have done so well that Sandeep Lamichhane is still waiting on the bench to get a chance to exhibit his skill in IPL 2020.

Unlike the last few seasons, Delhi Capitals seem to be in the right frame of mind and a lot of that has to do with the leadership, be it on the field or off the field. Shreyas Iyer has been terrific with his decisions on the field and the presence of Ricky Ponting to guide him from the dugout has certainly helped. His uncanny yet effective decision-making skills were apparent against Rajasthan Royals as well wherein Iyer deployed Ravi Ashwin early in the powerplay and that resulted in perhaps the game-changing dismissal of Jos Buttler.

On paper, Delhi Capitals have an excellent amalgamation of youth and experience. Their youngsters have performed to perfection while the senior have managed to step-up whenever asked for in the tournament so far. Marcus Stoinis, undoubtedly, has been the stand-out performer for them and seems to be enjoying the finisher role that he has played to perfection so far.

While the fact that Rishabh Pant still hasn’t managed to play a match-winning knock yet, the management will be pretty content with Pant’s performances so far. He has batted more responsibly and has taken a lot of pressure off Iyer’s shoulders. The Capitals are still far from their best, but considering the opponents, they are set to face in their upcoming assignment, DC might just need to shift gears pretty quickly. If they can do that, Mumbai Indians will certainly have their work cut out.

Contrary to the first few matches, the recent trend has been to win the toss and bat first. That is primarily because of the slow surface making things difficult under scoreboard pressure. The surface in the upcoming match is likely to be slow as well and chasing will be difficult. Although, the dew will be there to assist the chasing team, the captain winning the toss should elect to bat first.

The ground at Abu Dhabi has massive side boundaries and hitting sixes isn’t going to be easy here. This was apparent in the recently concluded match between Kings XI Punjab and KKR as well wherein fewer than average sixes were scored. Also, we expect the surface to be a bit two-paced and batsmen would need a little extra time to start going for big shots. Having said that, shot-making shouldn’t be too difficult for the batsmen once set and plenty of runs should be on offer. As we saw in the earlier matches as well, spinners will be tough to score quickly against on this ground. Dew will likely have an impact here but that will be limited to the second half of the second innings. Keeping the factors stated above into consideration, the team batting first will be looking to post a total of 170 runs on the board.

    • Rishabh Pant
    • Ishan Kishan
    • Rohit Sharma
    • Prithvi Shaw
    • Suryakumar Yadav
    • Marcus Stoinis (C)
    • Kieron Pollard (VC)
    • Kagiso Rabada
    • Jasprit Bumrah
    • Anrich Nortje
    • Rahul Chahar

Both sides are coming off wins against the same team – Rajasthan Royals and the manner of those wins was also pretty much the same. Having a terrific run in the tournament so far, both sides will be brimming with confidence. With the existent Delhi-Mumbai rivalry in India’s domestic circuit, this is going to be an intense, high-pressure game. Handling the pressure will be a key here and the team that holds their nerves will emerge on top. On paper, both sides are pretty much neck and neck, but with an experienced captain and a more settled core, Mumbai Indians appear to be marginally ahead. Also, the short break that Mumbai Indians have had could help them rejuvenate in the testing conditions of UAE. Considering those and the other reasons stated above, Mumbai Indians walk in as favorites to win the upcoming match, only marginally though.

Our Favorite Bets

Marcus Stoinis – Total Runs – Over 19.5, 1.83 @ Betway

Although Marcus Stoinis generally bats at number five for Delhi Capitals, he is likely to get a good number of delivers to bat going by the approach the Captials’ batsmen adopt. Also, with the form that he is in, it shouldn’t take more than a few deliveries to hit a personal score of more than 19.

Kieron Pollard – Total Sixes – Over 0.5, 1.65 @ Betway

If there’s one man in Mumbai Indians’ lineup you could rely on to hit sixes even in his sleep, it is Kieron Pollard. Pollard has been in stupendous form this season and is capable of hitting the ball hard and long right from the word go. Considering that it is almost a certainty that Pollard will get to bat, this punt seems to be the risk worth taking.

1st Over – Total Runs – Over 6.5, 2.00 @ 10Cric

We have seen the openers of both sides take the aggressive route right from the very first over in the tournament gone so far. Delhi Capitals have Prithvi Shaw who likes to take on the bowlers whereas Mumbai Indians have Quinton de Kock who likes to dominate the bowlers. Therefore, it is highly likely that the team batting first will hit at least seven runs in the first over of the match.

Total Runs – Match – Over 322.5, 1.83 @ 1xBet

Abu Dhabi has been the lower scoring venue in the tournament so far and while we expect the trend to continue, this match is likely to produce more than the average score here. It is largely because of the terrific batting lineups the two sides have. Also, this is a night match and dew could make batting easier in the second innings. For those reasons, we think that the total runs scored in this match should easily exceed 322 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah an Kagiso Rabada To Take A Wicket Each – Yes, 2.05 @ 1xBet

Bumrah and Rabada have both been in fantastic form with the ball and have managed to pick up wickets both at the start and at the death. We are likely to see both these bowlers both at least a couple of overs each at the death where the chances of getting a wicket increase exponentially. With more than 2x returns on offer, this seems to be a decent bet as well.
