Chennai Super Kings 2.10 Kings XI Punjab 1.80

It just continues to get better and better. If the qualification scenarios in IPL 2020 didn’t look chaotic a couple of days ago, they certainly do so now. We are almost at the end stage of the league stage and there are still three slots open on the points table. Barring Chennai Super Kings, all teams are well within the touching distance of qualification. With the Royals’ win over the Kings, it is certain that at least one of Capitals and Challengers will finish among the top two sides along with Mumbai Indians.

Kings XI Punjab, who looked prime contenders to qualify for the playoffs just a match ago now find themselves in a spot of bother. They’ll have no option but to win their upcoming match, in which they are set to face Chennai Super Kings. Even though the Super Kings haven’t been at their best, Kings XI Punjab wouldn’t want to take them lightly given the form the Super Kings have shown of late. This is the battle of the Kings and is expected to go right down to the wire. The match between the two sides is to be played at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi, on 1st November 2020.

Given the wins that the Super Kings have posted in their recent matches, they’ll be in a bitter-sweet situation. While no team wants to lose at any stage of the tournament, Chennai Super Kings, with every win, are being reminded of the matches that they should have won, but didn’t. They are still at the bottom of the table and if they had another couple of points to their name, things would have been very different. Not to be, though.

Remarkably, in the earlier part of the tournament none of the changes that CSK were making seemed to be working. However, it now seems that MS Dhoni has developed a Midas touch given the way the youngsters have stepped up for CSK in the recent matches. Coincidentally, this happened exactly after MS Dhoni had mentioned that CSK’s youngsters lacked some spark. Ruturaj Gaikwad now has back to back half-centuries to his name and will be looking to build on the promise that he has shown.

As has been the case in the tournament so far, Chennai Super Kings flirted with danger against the Knight Riders as well before Ravindra Jadeja played a scintillating cameo to guide his team home. While Jadeja hasn’t really done a lot with the ball this year, he certainly has stepped up his batting. He has perhaps been the only batsmen in the CSK’s lineup who has managed to finish their innings with a flourish. CSK will any day take his form with the bat but will want Jadeja to do better with the ball as well.

CSK had been looking for perfection since their opening game and they found that with their back to back wins in their last two matches. Even though they made truck-loads of changes, it didn’t seem to have any impact as almost everyone appeared to be pretty cognizant of his role. Karn Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mitchell Santner give MS Dhoni a lot of options in the middle-overs on the slowing surfaces, which MS Dhoni didn’t have in the earlier part of the tournament.

Dhoni talked about giving opportunities to the youngsters and we might see yet another change in the playing eleven in the upcoming match. We might see KM Asif come in place of Deepak Chahar. That, however, will leave a huge void to fill in the bowling department and it will be interesting to see the lineup that CSK come out with on Sunday.

Regardless of how they have performed in the tournament so far, the Super Kings will be brimming with confidence, largely because of the wins they posted in the last two matches. Ruturaj Gaikwad has appeared to be an incredibly settled player and is likely to have a vital role in the upcoming match as well. On paper, the Super Kings still have a decent team and with MS Dhoni at the helm of the things, they certainly cannot be discounted.

Chennai Super Kings Playing 11

Up until their most recent match wherein they were crushed by Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab were certainly the best team in the second half of the tournament. They had a streak of five wins and were in a prime position to make it to the playoffs. Having said that, they are still pretty much in the hunt for the playoffs, but would need to win their remaining match and would also need Sunrisers to lose at least one of their remaining two matches.

Despite the deflating loss, Kings XI Punjab still find themselves at the fourth spot on the ladder,r but they’ll know that have to play out of their skins to qualify from here. Besides, they had an opportunity to grab one of the top two spots, but with their recent loss, that opportunity has vanished as well.

Given the kind of tournament Kings XI Punjab, it is pretty fitting that their fate will be decided in their last league game. Kings XI Punjab were involved in some of the closest matches of the tournament, including the match that featured two super-overs. The experience of finishing the close games is likely to come in handy in the upcoming match as well, should it gets to the last-ball finish.

The addition of Chris Gayle to the playing eleven has certainly made a tremendous difference to the balance KXIP have. They no longer appear to be lacking the intent in the middle-order with Chris Gayle there to hit the ball out of the park. However, KL Rahul will have to find a way not to decelerate after getting off to a start. His 46-run knock against Rajasthan Royals proved to be rather slow and that is something KXIP would want to address. KXIP have the services of Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell available in the lower middle order and that ensures that KXIP are never really short of fire-power, at least with the bat.

There were speculations of Mayank Agarwal featuring in the match against the Royals, but perhaps the management decided to allow Agarwal an extra bit of time to get back to his best. We expect him to be in the playing eleven in the upcoming match and Deepak Hooda might have to make way for Mandeep Singh, who will most likely drop to number six.

While it is Kings XI Punjab’s batting that looks intimidating, it’s actually been their bowling that has intimidated other teams in the last few matches. The spin pair of Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin has been brilliant in the middle overs, and that, in fact, has allowed Kings to take control of the ship more often than not. With Mohammad Shami, Chris Jordan, and Arshdeep Singh bowling well, KXIP should be pretty confident with their bowling and will likely shrug off their bowling performance against the Royals as a one bad night. Apart from those, the Kings have Glenn Maxwell available as the sixth bowling option and he has been pretty effective against the left-handers in the tournament so far.

All in all, Kings XI Punjab finally seem to be doing justice to the potential they have as a team. They have done remarkably well in their recent games and have often thrived under pressure. With the ultimate pressure of a playoff spot at stake, they’d need to keep their nerves against an experienced CSK unit, and if the Kings can do that, they’ll be in for business.

The surfaces in the morning games tend to get slower and slower with every passing game. That can be a blessing for the team batting first only if they have runs on the board. If not it could mean a walk in the park for the team chasing. While setting up the total will be difficult, we expect the captain winning the toss to bat first.

We have seen all sorts of things here in Abu Dhabi. There have been high scoring matches and there have been matches where teams have bundled out for a lot less. However, there’s been a clear trend in the morning games. In those games, the surface here has gone slower with every passing over and batting has been increasingly difficult. Of the matches in which the teams batting second won, the totals were way to under-par. This illustrates that if you have runs on the board, defending the totals will not be as difficult as in the evening games. As it is a day game, dew is not going to be a factor. Considering all that, the team batting first should be pretty happy with anything over 165 runs on the board.

It is the last league match for both CSK and KXIP in the tournament and while CSK don’t have much hinging one the result, KXIP are likely to have a playoff spot at stake. However, Chennai Super Kings will be playing for their fans & their lost pride, making them a dangerous team to deal with. The two teams had contrasting results in their respective last matches with KXIP facing a heavy defeat against RR whereas CSK edging past KKR in a closely fought game. On a broader scale, however, Kings XI Punjab have been a better side based on the recent form as they have won five out of their last six matches. They have a well-settled unit and are not likely to make too many changes to their playing eleven. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, might make a few changes to provide their youngsters a chance to showcase their skills. Keeping the factors mentioned above into consideration, Kings XI Punjab are more likely to emerge on top in this virtual knock-out clash.

Our Favorite Bets

Chris Gayle – Total Runs – Over 25.5, 1.83 @ Betway

Ever since Chris Gayle has joined the playing eleven for KXIP, they have looked an altogether different unit. Much of that can be attributed to the consistent performances of Chris Gayle. Apart from the first few games, he has managed to clear the ropes whenever he wanted to besides. Besides Chennai Super Kings do not really have an express bowler who can cause trouble for the big man. Expect Chris Gayle to easily cross the 25-run mark.

Ruturaj Gaikwad – Total Runs – Over 20.5, 1.83 @ Betway

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been brilliant in the last two matches. He has played relatively risk-free cricket and with two back to back fifties behind him, he will be brimming with confidence. Converting starts into big ones appears to be his forte and we expect him to do that yet again.

Match Total – Over 310.5, 1.83 @ 1xBet

While the surface is likely to support the bowlers, the match total of 311 doesn’t really look intimidating. Kings XI Punjab have a terrific batting lineup with big hitters available right through. Also, Chennai Super Kings are coming off two back to back successful chases. For those reasons, we believe that a match total of more than 310 is certainly on the cards.
